Hockey 2011School 1 Old Boys 4 A well contested game, played in glorious sunshine on the Hawkenbury all-weather pitch, saw the Old Boys come out on top this year, with three of their goals coming in the last quarter of the game. The first half was evenly balanced, with both sides failing to convert penalty corners. The OS went ahead after about 20 minutes, thanks to Alex Arthur, but the school hit back before half time as the OS defence was caught wide open, allowing Tom Horne to cooly put the ball past goalkeeper Alex Kemp. For a time it looked as if a draw would be the final result but, as time went on, the superior skills and experience of Will Arthur, Luke Wedmore and Will Ruxton saw the Old Boys dominate the last quarter, with goals coming from Paddy Fyson (2) and Luke Wedmore - in spite of the sterling efforts of Ed Sharp in the school goal. The game was a fitting end to the school's season, with two sets of brothers - Hooper and Clarke-Knowles - being pitched against each other and immediate Past President, Richard Sharples, better known for his rugby skills, showing what an all-round games player he is. Thanks to Tom Clarke-Knowles for organising the OS team and to umpires Tim Watts and John Burton. Tony Holding |
